Onion is a great natural option for hair growth, as this staple kitchen vegetable has high sulphur content, which is a key ingredient in keratin that makes up most of our hair’s structure. When applied to the scalp, onion oil immediately increases the blood circulation, nourishing our hair follicles and preventing the strands from falling out. Here's how you can make it at home.
Take 3 medium peeled onions with a type of carrier oil like olive, coconut, or sesame and drops of essential oils such as lavender and rosemary.
Peel and chop the onions finely and then blend them in a mixer to extract the juice. Use a cheesecloth and transfer the paste into it, only to squeeze and strain the juice from the grated onion.
Mix the onion juice with your chosen carrier oil in a pan, and heat the mixture on low flame, stirring it gently until the oil absorbs the properties of the onion. Next, add the essential oils after the heating process is over.
Allow this mixture to cool off completely and strain the oil through a fine mesh strainer to remove any onion residue. Store this oil mixture in a dark glass jar and use it directly from the bottle for a month.
Use this oil twice a week in small amounts on your scalp and hair strands. Massage gently and leave it on for at least 30 minutes before washing with a mild shampoo.
Yes, onion hair oil is suitable for all hair types, including dry, normal, oily, and combination scalps as well. But people with sensitive scalps should usually avoid this because onions can be a harsh element, resulting in red patches, irritation, and itching issues as well.
Many people can get an ick from the smell of onion; however, you cannot remove it completely, but by adding a few drops of essential oils like lavender or peppermint, you can reduce the strong odour.
There are rarely any cases of side effects heard post onion hair oil application on the scalp; however, people with sensitive scalps may get a mild allergic reaction and can always start with a patch test before full application.
