Lovely Movie Review : A fantasy comedy weighed down by a poor screenplay and half-baked ideas

Critic's Rating: 2.5/5
Director Dileesh Karunakaran's Lovely is a film with big ambitions that falters a bit in its execution. Bonnie (played by Mathew) joins a government job at a young age, and due to a set of unfortunate events, ends up in jail—where he meets 'Lovely,' the housefly.

Mathew is semi-convincing as Bonnie, but at certain points, the emotions don't land with the right intensity. Prashanth Murali and Manoj K. Jayan deliver strong performances. Aswathy, while doing her best with what she was given, is made to perform bizarre mannerisms—highlighting how filmmakers still struggle to write female characters with both desire and personality.

The screenplay is very shaky and half-baked at best. The dialogues are also all over the place, never quite achieving a natural tone. Everything wraps up in sunshine and roses, leaving behind a puzzled audience wondering why some of these elements were expected to work. Baburaj and Sreejith Ravi are also part of the film-the former being more of a prop than anything.

However, a few ideas serve as saving graces—the unapologetic selfishness of people portrayed without any justification, and the believable shift in Bonnie's character arc towards the end. One remarkable scene involves a mosquito bat, leaving a lasting impression due to how casual the action is and how it appears from the other side. It could also be interpreted as a metaphor for human life.

On the technical side, while the CGI is commendable, the 3D feels almost unnecessary—except for the scenes involving the flying eecha. Sivaangi Krishnakuar's voice didn't work well and fails to help connect with Lovely.

Lovely might be worth a one-time watch, given that it's experimental at its core, and Aashiq Abu's cinematography makes it aesthetically pleasing. Still, the film lacks the "wow" factor needed to truly hook its audience.
