India vs New Zealand Highlights, 2nd Test Day 3: Kiwis win by 113 runs, take unbeatable series lead

Rohit Sharma wraps up the post-match press conference by stressing on the need to focus on what made them good for 12 years and not on these two matches alone where things didn't go per plan. The India captain didn't single out any individual and focused on it being a collective failure - largely the batters who didn't give the bowlers enough to work with. The third Test, at the Wankhede Stadium from 1 November, doesn't hold any value but for potentially giving the team one final practice before the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Until then, goodbye!

Rohit Sharma: "I didn't expect ball to seam around in Bengaluru. Same here, you can't know how much it will spin. We had three spinners because we wanted to keep balance. If there is variable bounce, we need the seamers to come in. But the spinners were doing the job"

Rohit Sharma: "Ash and Jadeja, they have too much expectation on them. They are expected to run through the team, win Tests. It is not fair on them. By their standards, they know what they have to do and have done. They have played a major role in these 18 series wins. Sometimes, you are allowed to have bad games here and there. You can't run through the opposition every time. It is a collective responsibility. If Ash doesn't do well, then Jadeja, Washi, Axar need to come in. Washi had a great game. He bowled so well. Santner kept the ball on the stumps, that is where the challenge comes. We had to exploit that as well, make them play as many as possible. You're talking about people who have taken 500 and 300 wickets. They know how to do that. It is hard on them to have such expectations. It can happen and that's when others need to step up and take responsibility"

Rohit Sharma: "I am not going to overreact after this defeat. You need to chat with certain players. There's no need to sit in a corner and discuss each innings. Clear messages, keeping them calm and that is our responsibility (towards youngsters)"

Rohit Sharma: "We had a great run for 12 years, we were doing great things during this period. I don't think there's anything that we need to talk differently and do differently. We will think about what we didn't do well and what we can improve but I don't need to open a medical kit and start doing differently things. We need to understand that this team has done a lot of good things in the past"

Rohit Sharma: "I am of the mindset that if we can win a Test than draw a match. That is how we were able to pull things off in Kanpur. Even in this Test, that is what we wanted to do with partnerships. It just didn't work in our favour"

Rohit Sharma: "It's too early to think of WTC. I am hurting because we lost the game. I can't think of what lies ahead and whether it affects our chances. I am hurting because we lost the series. There are things we need to do. If you lose a Test, it is because the collective unit failed. If you win, everyone deserves credit. If you lose, everyone needs to take the blame"

Rohit Sharma: "We have won 18 series in a row at home. So we have done a good job. In this series, we didn't bat as well as required. These things happen. We have scored on challenging wickets. I don't want to dwell on these two poor Tests much. Two or three bad innings happen. What we wanted to do in this series with the bat didn't work. Don't want to do a post-mortem a lot. But yes, we want to trust our plan, our process, our method. The New Zealand batters showed that. We used to do that. So, yeah it happens"

Rohit Sharma: "350 to get, we knew that the mindset was going to be important. We lost wickets quickly after Gill and Jaiswal. We failed to respond to that pressure"

Mitchell Santner, who took 13 wickets, is the Player of the Match. "Not really (bowled differently in second innings?) Felt a little harder this time. Credit to India for the way they came out. That was the best way on that wicket. We were just hanging in.

My side's a bit sore. 20-odd overs in a row. I guess in that kind of situation you just want to keep going. Everytime I got a wicket it felt a little better.

Nice to contribute to the team. Winning a series over here is very tough. Obviously very pleasing for us. Everytime you take wickets you feel confident. Landing the ball in the same spot all the time with little changes in pace - that's what we try and do as a spin unit."

Tom Latham in the presentation: "Really special feeling. Proud to be in this position. Whole team effort and a clear example of everyone pitching in. When you come over here you want to put your best foot forward. Putting runs on the board at the start was really important.

Have to mention Mitch Santner. He was fantastic. Has been around the group a long time, and to finally get a break and bowl the way he has - credit to him.

It was about trying to stick to our basics and play the long game. Both surfaces have been different, we've needed to adapt and we've done that very well. The method we played with last night - to put ourselves on the front foot - was terrifc.

The way GP [Glenn Phillips] played this morning was really important. We knew India were going to come out hot. Didn't realise they were going to come that hot, but we managed to get the breakthroughs in the middle session. Those last two wickets took an age but when Tim took that catch we were really happy."

Rohit Sharma in the presentation: "Disappointing. It's not what we expected. Got to give credit to New Zealand - they played better than us. We failed to capitalise on certain moments. We failed to respond to those challenges. And we sit here today.

Didn't think we batted well enough to get runs on the board. You've got to pick 20 wickets to win, yes, but batters have to put runs on the board. Was a great fightback to restrict them to 250-odd but we knew it was going to be challenging.

When they started off, they were 200/3 and for us to come back and get them bowled out for 259 was a great effort.

Wasn't a pitch where a lot was happening. We just didn't bat well enough. Things would've been slightly different had we got a bit closer in the first innings.

We want to show up well at Wankhede and try and win that Test. It's a collective failure. I'm not somebody who would blame just the batters or the bowlers. We will come out with better intent, better ideas and better methods at Wankhede."

New Zealand's Glenn Phillips says: "It's indescribable and for us to do it for the first time in history, it is very hard to describe this. It is long graft and grind."

[On India] "They are incredibly strong. For us to win and to learn and adapt in spin friendly conditions was fantastic. I wish it gets easy with time. But it's tough to comprehend how tough it is to win here. For us to adjust was great."

[On Santner] "He was having a golden run. We just wanted to hold on. Whatever he touched turned to gold. We wanted to hold on from the other end. The intent the boys showed the top seven was great. "

Spinner Mitchell Santner put New Zealand on the cusp of their first Test series win in India, reducing the hosts to 178-7 at tea in a chase of 359 on Saturday.

Santner, who took 7-53 in India's first innings of 156, rattled the Indian batting with five wickets on day three of the second Test on a turning pitch in Pune.

Ravindra Jadeja, on four, and Ravichandran Ashwin, on nine, were batting at the break with India staring at their first Test series defeat at home since December 2012.

India bowled out New Zealand for 255 inside the first hour of play and opener Yashasvi Jaiswal in his 65-ball 77 came out attacking to raise hopes of a miracle.

India lost skipper Rohit Sharma for eight but raced to 81-1 at lunch in 12 overs.

Santner took down Shubman Gill for 23 soon after the break to end a 62-run second-wicket stand with the left-handed Jaiswal, who powered on after reaching his fifty.

The in-form spinner finally had Jaiswal caught at slip, run out Rishabh Pant for a duck and trapped Virat Kohli lbw, dousing India's chances.

Glenn Phillips chipped in with the wicket of Washington Sundar for 21.

The highest successful Test chase for India at home was 387 against England at Chennai in 2008.

New Zealand lead the three-match series 1-0 after winning the opener -- their first Test victory on Indian soil since 1988.

India spinners Sundar and Jadeja shared seven wickets between them in the second innings, with Jadeja claiming three of the five to fall on Saturday morning.

That's it! Tea in Pune on Day 3. And it is not a good sight if you are an Indian fan. Rohit Sharma and Co. are seven down with 178 on the board at the break and stating at a big defeat.

India were well placed at 81 for 1 after Lunch but the hosts had yet another collapse in the second innings with Santner wreaking havoc again.

He bagged another five-wicket haul in the second innings after bagging 7 in the first.

India scored 97 runs in the session but lost 6 wickets in it as well and they are now in a really bad situation.

R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja go into the break unbeaten on 9 and 4 respectively.

Looking to work the Phillips ball on the leg side, Sundar pressed forward but the ball spun in and Sundar ended up with an inside edge after which the ball hit his pad and ballooned. What an effort this has been from the left-arm spinner. He knocks over Sarfaraz Khan for 9 for his fifth scalp in this innings. A lovely, flighted delivery from Santner as it angles in and turns away after pitching. It goes past the outside edge of Sarfaraz' bat and hits the off stump. India 165/6 in 35.2 overs

OUT! A massive blow for Team India as Mitchell Santner gets rid of star batter Virat Kohli. Santner from round the wicket bowls a good length ball around off and it doesn't turn and goes with the arm. It kept low as well as Kohli, on the backfoot, fails to get his bat down in time. He gets trapped in front as the on-field umpire ruled him out straightaway. Kohli did sent it upstairs but ball-tracking confirmed that hte delivery was going to hit on to the leg stump. A disappointed Kohli walks back for 17. India 147/5 in 29.6 overs

In this innings, he is trusting his defence more unlike the first innings. Washington Sundar too has added 10 runs so far. A second maiden from Santner comes to an end. OUT! Woah! India have now lost two wickets in no time. After Yashasvi Jaiswal blow, Rishabh Pant gets run out for a three-ball duck while trying to steal a non-existent single. Virat Kohli dabbed an Ajaz Patel to backward-point and Pant just took off. Then, there was a bit of hesitation from Pant mid-way but he eventually continued. He dived in late as well but the throw from Mitchell Santner was spot on, right over the stumps. Tom Blundell took the bails off in a flash and replays showed Pant was way outside his crease despite the dive. India 127/4 in 22.2 overs

OUT! Mitchell Santner strikes soon after lunch and the Kiwis have managed to break this aggressive 62-run stand between Shubman Gill and fifty-up Yashasvi Jaiswal. Santner from round the wicket bowled a quicker good length ball at stumps and Gill was found stuck at the crease. The ball gets the extra bounce, takes the edge off Gill's bat and goes straight to Daryl Mitchell at first slip. Gill walks back for 23. India 96/2 in 15.3 overs

Close shave! Huge moment in the game as Yashasvi Jaiswal survives an LBW review from the Kiwis. Jaiswal was looking to paddle-sweep a Glenn Phillips behind on the leg side and got the front leg out. The ball went past under his bat and hit the front pad. After the on-field umpire ruled not out, the Kiwis sent it upstairs. Ball-tracking shows that Impact is umpire's call, which is just outside off. Jaiswal gets lucky. India 92/1 in 14.1 overs

Yashasvi Jaiswal raises a half-century off just 41 balls. A cracker of a knock this has been from the stylish left-hander. An 8th Test fifty for Jaiswal and what a time this has been to bring it.

Jaiswal came out all guns blazing in this India's steep 359 chase and laid a solid platform. He has so far hit 4 fours and 3 sixes and is looking in sublime touch.

If India are to hunt down this total and level series, Jaiswal will be the key. He has got to score a big ton in this chase!
