Suriya’s latest film ‘Retro’, directed by Karthik Subbaraj, is showing consistent performance at the box office, closing its tenth day with a cumulative collection of Rs 55.28 crore (India net). The Tamil-language thriller, which features an ensemble cast including Pooja Hegde, Joju George, Jayaram, Nassar, and Prakash Raj, is maintaining a steady momentum despite a few expected weekday drops.

Impressive First Week Numbers

As reported by the Sacnilk website, the film had a solid start, earning Rs 19.25 crore on its opening day, and went on to accumulate Rs 52.95 crore in its first week alone. While the second Friday saw a significant dip to Rs 1.05 crore, ‘Retro’ bounced back slightly on Day 10 (Saturday) with Rs 1.28 crore, showing a 21.90% growth. Tamil Nadu remains the primary contributor to the box office figures, with minor collections from Telugu and Hindi versions.

Stylish Narrative and Strong Performances

‘Retro’ has been praised for its neo-noir aesthetics and gripping storytelling. Suriya’s stylish avatar and Karthik Subbaraj’s direction have drawn attention. Even though there are mixed reports for the film, Suriya’s performance is said to be the best and one of the main highlights. The single-shot wedding sequence is also getting much adulation from the audiences. ETimes review reads, “Then there's Suriya, whose very presence lights up the frames. The actor's performance, too, feels more organic when compared to some of his recent works where there was a certain artifice creeping into the acting. Then, there's Santhosh Narayanan, who delivers foot-tapping numbers and a rousing background score that elevates even the weaker moments. If only had the writing been more focused in the latter portions, Retro could have escaped the curse of the second half, and turned into something truly memorable.”

Can It Sustain Into Week 2?

With its India net collection standing at Rs 55.28 crore by Day 10, Retro is likely to cross the Rs 60 crore mark in the coming days. The Sunday figures will be crucial in determining how far the film can push its overall run. While it faces some competition from new releases, its strong word-of-mouth and genre appeal could help it hold ground.
