A recent statement from WWE Hall of Famer John “Bradshaw” Layfield stated former WWE star Alberto Del Rio (El Patron) as the “best wrestler in the world today.” This recent statement from the wrestling legend has indeed ignited debates. The series of bold praise and claims from JBL has sent shock waves in the wrestling community, leaving fans divided. While Del Rio was a prominent figure during his WWE stint, fans question if this is just nostalgia talking or if Del Rio truly is an underrated talent.

JBL praises Alberto Del Rio’s wrestling skills and calls him “the best.”

JBL is no stranger when it comes to appreciating talent, and his recent conversation underlined the impactful praise he had for former WWE icon Alberto Del Rio. While speaking on Something to Wrestle With Bruce Prichard, he emphasized the incredible wrestling skills he got to witness of the former WWE star that took him by surprise at the AAA Rey De Reyes 2025. The WWE legend stated, “The last match they had with Del Rio and El Hijo del Vikingo was one of the best matches I’ve seen this year, this decade — it was absolutely fantastic. They do tons of run-ins; a lot of stuff doesn’t make any sense necessarily to American wrestling fans. That all made sense.”
JBL further continued and stated, “That last match they had with Del Rio — he goes by Patron now-—was just outstanding. I think that Alberto Patron is the best wrestler in the world today. Not in Mexico, not heel, best wrestler in the world today. I’ve been in the business for 30-something years. I’ve seen them all and wrestled them all. I called most of his matches in WWE. I’ve never seen — I don’t know when I’ve ever seen anybody more on top of his game. I say never — you know, Shawn Michaels. The greats are great. You know, Taker, the guys like that are great. I’ve never seen anybody better. He’s a ring general like you wouldn’t believe, and he is absolutely on top of his game. You’ve got to see him wrestle. He’s that freaking good right now.”

While Del Rio’s WWE career was short-lived, he still gained deserved attention from the wrestling world. JBL, being one of many, was able to recognize Del Rio’s exceptional wrestling skills despite his departure being years ago from the company.
